One of two brothers charged with an assault that was videoed and posted on the YouTube internet site, could be moving to a new school in Hastings.
The 14-year-old and his 16-year-old brother appeared in the Hastings Youth Court today for sentence on a charge of assaulting a former fellow student at a Hastings park on March 30.
The night-time assault was witnessed by 30 to 40 young people who were alerted by text messages.
One witness who videotaped the assault edited it several days later, added a soundtrack of rap music, and posted it on YouTube, where it was viewed more than 100 times before it was withdrawn.
The younger boy's lawyer, Don Kennedy, said his client was no longer at the high school where his victim was still a pupil, and had not had any form of education for the past six or seven weeks.
He asked for a further remand until August 8, saying an approach had been made to another school in Hastings.
He was waiting for a decision from its board of trustees.
If the other school declined to accept him, the Ministry of Education would have to direct another school to take the boy, he said.
The remand until August would help determine whether the boy was "on the right track or not".
Judge Bridget MacIntosh agreed to remand the boy until August 8 on existing bail terms, which include no contact with the assault victim.
His older brother was remanded until July 2 with his counsel, Roger Philip (crct) saying his situation was different in that there was the prospect of an apprenticeship being offered to him.
