Former All Black Zinzan Brooke has spoken for the first time about the horrific accident that led to a fractured skull and life-saving brain surgery.
Speaking at Valencia Airport as he was about to board a private jet and fly home to Windsor, Berkshire, Brooke said he still could not remember what happened.
"It was early hours and ... when I went back into the hotel, there was a step about 150mm and I tripped over it and just missed the glass door and then fell on the back of my head and then sort of scraped the back of my head and split my head open," he told One News.
Brooke, sporting a shaven patch of scalp where doctors operated to remove the blood clot, said the events had shaken him.
"Back on my feet now so been feeling a lot better, but it's been a little bit scary in the last few days."
His wife Alison said what had happened was amazing.
"Even the doctors are amazed. They seem to think there's been some kind of good luck thing ... covering him and looking after him ... Virgin Mary is what they said."
The 42-year-old checked out of hospital in Elche, Spain on Tuesday. He was admitted to the hospital after fracturing his skull in a fall on May 24.
