A New Zealand Navy ship had to be towed back to the base at Devonport after an overheating problem yesterday morning.
It is understood the stern gland seals on HMNZS Rotoiti overheated as the ship left Auckland. The ship's company responded immediately by shutting off the engines and the ship was towed to the naval base for repairs.
There was no significant damage and the repairs should be completed by today when it would return to operations.
A spokesman for the New Zealand Defence Force said a formal investigation would be undertaken to understand the cause of the problem.
