Veteran broadcaster Brendan Telfer faces a long stay in Wellington Hospital, after emerging from a coma today.
Telfer, 58, has been breathing on his own, though he has been lapsing in and out of sleep.
He was expected to remain in hospital for at least two weeks.
Telfer collapsed at Wellington airport on Sunday afternoon, when hit by a severe headache.
He was able to phone his wife for help, but was incoherent by the time an ambulance got him to hospital.
He was put in an induced coma and tests were carried out.
TVNZ confirmed today he had suffered a cranial aneurysm, which involves bleeding from the brain.
Telfer, a presenter for Radio Sport, has just released his book A Life in Sport. It went on sale today.
Publisher, Trio Books, had planned a launch in Auckland on Tuesday. That has been postponed.
Telfer has covered several Olympic Games and international netball tests for Television New Zealand.
