KEY POINTS:
A 24-year-old British woman is dead after a quad bike crash near Te Anga, 30km west of the Waitomo Caves in the Waikato.
A Waikato police spokesman said the woman was visiting the Waitomo Caves and was part of a group that went on a quad bike tour about 10am today.
"The woman appears to have died after losing control of her bike and crashing down a bank about 2km from Te Anga Rd in steep terrain," the spokesman said.
Police were working with Interpol to formally identify the woman and notify her family of her death.
It was understood she was travelling in New Zealand alone and was expected to be touring the country until 28 November.
Her name was not expected to be released until tomorrow.
Occupational Safety and Health investigators were expected at the scene this afternoon.
