Wairarapa put up a brave fight before losing their Chapple Cup limited-overs senior
men's cricket match against Manawatu at Fitzherbert Park, Palmerston North yesterday by two wickets.
While Wairarapa's total of 230 from their 50 overs was respectful enough the disappointment was that while no fewer than eight of their batsmen got into double figures none of them kicked on to a big score.
Opener Sam Curtis made 34 before being adjudged leg before wicket with Willie Tatham making 30, Jeremy Anderson 28, Robbie Anderson 26 and Chad Yates 23
Paceman Ewan Thompson was somewhat expensive in conceding 55 runs in his nine over for Manawatu but with three wickets he had the biggest haul of the six bowlers used by his side.
Manawatu lost an early wicket in their run chase but looked to be
cruising to victory through the efforts of top order batsmen Murray (93), Griggs (27) and Lampard (68 not out).
However, Wairarapa came right back into the game when a series of cheap wickets fell later in the innings and Manawatu were eight down when the winning runs were scored
Spinners Brad Edwards and Chad Yates bowled their full muster of 10 overs for Wairarapa with Edwards taking 3-43 and Yates 1-49.
Hayden Spierling chimed in with 2-41 from his 8.3 overs and Seth Rance and Willie Tatham both claimed one wicket apiece.
