Don Brash's executive assistant has parted ways with the National leader after an investigation by the party.
Garreth Spillane, a former organiser of the Big Gay Out and a former Aids Foundation promotions and fundraising head, resigned yesterday. He was appointed this year to help Dr Brash plan his regional programme around New Zealand.
It is understood the party had questions over his work background. After further investigations and advice from the Parliamentary Service, the matter was raised with Mr Spillane. He then tendered his resignation.
Dr Brash's chief of staff, Wayne Eagleson, said last night that Mr Spillane had tendered his resignation yesterday and it had been accepted.
He refused to reveal details of Mr Spillane's departure. It is believed Mr Spillane was hired to help Dr Brash with his image at public engagements. When he was appointed, Mr Eagleson said Mr Spillane had been hired because he was an excellent events organiser.
The news came as party members gathered in Christchurch yesterday for their annual conference, and at a time when the party is attempting to steer clear of controversy while rebuilding its image.
Dr Brash suffered a knock earlier in the week when a One News/Colmar Brunton poll put him on 14 per cent support in the preferred Prime Minister stakes, down four points on the last poll. Prime Minister Helen Clark was on 39 per cent support, up two.
Attempts to contact Mr Spillane for comment last night were unsuccessful.
