National Party leader Don Brash has appointed a public affairs specialist and former party campaign director as his new chief of staff.
Dr Brash announced today that Wayne Eagleson would fill the position vacated by current chief Richard Long, who has said he does not want to spend another three years working in opposition.
Mr Eagleson, once a private secretary to former prime minister Jim Bolger and National's campaign director in 1993, is currently the general manager of public affairs at state-owned power lines company Transpower.
Dr Brash said Mr Eagleson would take up the position in about a fortnight.
The 41-year-old has 20 years' experience in politics and business.
"Mr Eagleson will bring to the position exceptional skills, both in politics and public affairs, and a thorough knowledge of the National Party and its policies."
He was an expert in "reputation management and stakeholder relations" and as well as Transpower, had previously worked in public affairs for DB Breweries and Westpac.
