Doug Bracewell has been re-appointed coach of the women's Central Districts Hinds cricket team for the upcoming season.
That comes after the 2009-2010 season when Bracewell led the team to national titles in the Twenty20 and 50-over forms of the game.
Bracewell is delighted to have a second term in charge.
"Yes, it's always nice to be re-appointed. I'm happy to be able to help. I'm keen to develop women's cricket in Central Districts," he said.
This season is shaping up as a challenging one for Bracewell.
"We have already lost our two opening bowlers. Rachel Candy has gone to Canterbury and Abby Burrows is nursing a long-term injury".
Both players were included in the 2009 White Ferns squad and would have been almost certain starters again this season. To make matters worse, Bracewell could also be without the services of last season's White Ferns captain Amy ,Watkins who is rated a doubtful starter due to injury concerns that might result in her withdrawing from the game altogether.
"To lose all three girls would be terrible," Bracewell said.
With that possibility in mind though, Bracewell is looking to rebuild his squad, which will be selected following a camp in Palmerston North early next month, after which four preliminary games will take place. The business end of this season will then include one 50-over match and two Twenty20s.
Despite his re-appointment, Bracewell isn't a fan of the shorter version of the game.
"Yep, personally I prefer the longer game. This allows more time for players out in the middle to see whole sessions through and builds up factors such as concentration levels, patience and restraint. Shorter forms of the game have spectator appeal but it doesn't help the players build up decent periods of batting time, like trying to bat through whole sessions."
It is to the shorter game though, that Bracewell will have to devote much of his attention for the foreseeable future.
