KEY POINTS:
BP, Mobil, Shell and Gull have dropped petrol prices for the second time this week.
The four cent cut brings the cost of unleaded 91 to $1.629 per litre at Mobil, BP and Shell and 1.619 at Gull.
On Monday, all the major petrol companies dropped their prices by six cents.
BP managing director Peter Griffiths said the international market situation was still volatile and the company would monitor prices daily.
Mobil spokesman Alan Bailey said the price drop this morning came amid a continuing softening of the refined petrol price.
"And the New Zealand dollar is stabilising or strengthening a little bit," Mr Bailey said.
He said there was no movement on diesel at this stage because the demand from economic growth in Asia was still strong.
Gull retail manager Dave Bodger said international petrol prices had dropped by about $6 overnight.
"That gave us some room to pass some savings on," Mr Bodger said.
Shell spokeswoman Jackie Maitland said Shell had seen a softening of price and matched Mobil's four cent drop.
Caltex have so far not returned phone calls.
