Two teenagers were alarmed that a man was carrying what they believed to be a gun and bullets when they ran into him on Renall Street on Friday night. The Armed Offenders Squad were called over from Wellington to investigate the incident but could not find the man or a firearm.
The two boys were wandering down the footpath on Renall Street around 10pm when they came across a man who said he had just been down the street to speak to a person about some dogs. They noticed the man was carrying a firearm. When the boys returned home they notified police who called on the AOS for assistance.
The special police unit checked the address and talked to two individuals but did not find the suspect.
Police enquiries are continuing.
Senior Sergeant Warwick Burr said it was police policy to use the armed offenders unit if the situation required. "Anything that could be risky, we get the experts in," he said.
