Boy's legs seriously injured in crash

An eight-year-old boy suffered serious leg injuries after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing a Rotorua road.

The boy was crossing Homedale St when he was struck about 5.50pm yesterday.

Rotorua road policing officer Senior Sergeant Denton Grimes said the boy suffered serious injuries to his lower legs and was taken to Rotorua Hospital, where he was last night in a stable condition.

Police were inspecting the vehicle and investigations were ongoing.

"Early indications are that speed is not a contributing factor, nor is alcohol from the person driving the vehicle," Mr Grimes said.

The boy had been struck on one side of the road that he was crossing, and had not been hit in a driveway.

It is understood he was struck by a people mover vehicle.

Police yesterday cordoned off Homedale St between Edmund Rd and Beryl Place while they carried out a scene examination.

The road was cleared by 7.20pm.

Anyone who witnessed the crash was asked to get in touch.
