KEY POINTS:
Police arrested two boys, aged 14 and 15, after a 56-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and left traumatised as she left the Coopers Beach Bowling Club last Friday night.
The club had closed for the night and the woman was believed to have been on her own.
Senior Sergeant Gordon Gunn of Kaitaia police said the woman was attacked and then subjected to a sexual assault. She was treated for her injuries but did not go to hospital.
Mr Gunn said she had been traumatised by the attack.
At about the same time, residents reported the theft of items from parked vehicles and a car was stolen from Coopers Beach and driven to Kaeo.
Mr Gunn said the offenders then tried to take another car but were disturbed by its owner and ran off.
Police were called and caught the two boys.
They were taken into custody and face charges of sexual offending, theft and stealing a car.
Mr Gunn said other charges could follow as investigations continued.
Kaitaia police are asking people to contact them if they saw any questionable incidents or suspicious activity or if they have information regarding items taken from vehicles in the Coopers Beach-Mangonui area late on Friday night.
