Boy racers who attacked a female security guard near Christchurch International Airport on Wednesday night were cowardly bullies, Police Minister Judith Collins says.
The woman had driven through a few illegal street racers on Pound St, near the airport, while she was on patrol about 10.30pm, police said.
The youths managed to trap the woman's vehicle with their cars and threw bottles at her car smashing the driver's window and two passenger windows, The Press reported.
Aviation Security Service general manager Mark Everitt said the middle-aged officer was alone and tried to drive away but a car pulled in front of her, while others followed behind.
"The car in front was right up against the bonnet. It was like they had her imprisoned," he said.
The boy racers left shortly after. The woman was covered in shattered glass but was otherwise unhurt.
She was "severely shaken" and was now on leave.
Ms Collins said the "appalling" incident had strengthened her resolve to pass laws to curb boy racers.
"It's very difficult to bully people when your car is crushed into a little cube," she said.
Police are investigating.
The Government this week unveiled legislation to tackle illegal street racing.
If passed boy racers could see their cars crushed if they are convicted of three street racing offences in four years.
