A 10-year-old boy is in a stable condition at Starship hospital after he was struck by a car in Whangarei yesterday.
The accident happened about 5.30pm on Kamo Rd, just south of Bedlington Rd, in Whau Valley.
A south-bound car struck the boy as he was crossing the road, police said.
The driver, a man in his 20s, stopped immediately and was helping police with their enquiries.
He was driving a Honda City, and was receiving help from Victim Support.
The speed limit along Kamo Road was 50km/h, but neither speed nor alcohol were factors, Sergeant John Fagan told NZPA.
He urged anyone who saw the incident to come forward.
The incident yesterday left SH1 closed, and renewed calls from nearby residents to get a bypass built.
Children often played on the busy road, and one resident said he often heard cars braking hard.
