A school boy who accidentally shot himself in the leg with a spear gun had the arrow ground down at the scene before it was removed in hospital.
The 13-year-old was injured when eeling in a creek at the back of rural properties at Ngaratunua, in Whangarei.
Fire and ambulance staff accessed the boy through the nearby Northland Golf Course just after midday.
The spear, stuck in the back of his calf muscle, was ground down by fire crew at the scene so he could be moved safely.
An emergency services member who was at the scene said the boy was "in good shape and was happy when he was brought out."
