Police are appealing to the boy racer "fraternity" to come forward with what they know about events leading up to the death of pedestrian Amy Edward-Mintorn in Cambridge Terrace early on Sunday morning.
Ms Edward-Mintorn, 23, was hit by at least one car as she crossed the central Wellington street, known as a magnet for boy racers, about 1.40am on Sunday.
Three vehicles -- a red Toyota Trueno, a white Subaru coupe and a silver/grey Subaru -- have been seized for forensic examination.
Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Cotter, of Wellington CIB, said inquiries were focusing on the speed at which the three cars accelerated away from traffic lights at the Cambridge Terrace-Vivian Street intersection.
"We've been told that these vehicles were lined abreast in all three lanes waiting for the lights to change from red to green," he said.
Mr Cotter said police had had reports from members of the public that cars were racing in the Kent and Cambridge Terrace areas earlier on Saturday night.
Investigators were following these up to see if any involved the seized cars.
Police also wanted to get more details from those associated with the boy racer community, Mr Cotter said.
"Some boy racers have already contacted us but we'd like to hear from others as they all seem to recognise one another's vehicles."
Security camera footage from businesses in the crash area was also being studied to see if it held any useful information.
