KEY POINTS:
A 16-year-old boy racer on a learner's licence has spun out of control and through two fences, hitting a 80-year-old woman gardening, police have said.
The boy was estimated to have been travelling in excess of 100km/h at the time.
The crash happened in the Hamilton suburb of Glenview at about 5.30pm last night, in a 50km/h driving zone.
The woman was taken to Waikato Hospital with moderate back and shoulder injuries, but was discharged this morning.
Police said the youth was likely to face serious driving charges.
He lost control on a bend, crashed through one fence, over a kerb, through another fence, and into the woman's garden, they said.
The car left a 75m trail of skid marks on the road and across the woman's property.
The 16-year-old male driver was on a learner's licence, which prohibits the carrying of passengers.
He had two other 16-year-olds in the car with him. No-one in the car was injured.
Sergeant Jeff Penno said the car was travelling so fast it became unstable and it locked up and skidded for some distance.
"It's obvious the car was going extremely fast and we will be doing some in-depth analysis to determine that speed.
"This was insane driving that resulted in an innocent elderly woman being hurt. There could have been much more tragic consequences to this."
Interviews with witnesses were continuing.
