KEY POINTS:
The seven-year-old boy at the centre of a Nelson homicide investigation was not at school for more than a week before his death.
A post mortem was completed on the boy on June 3 and his 37-year-old step-father appeared in Nelson District Court earlier this month charged with assaulting the boy and was remanded in custody.
Police have refused to say what further charges would be laid or what the results of the post mortem were.
The boy's name has not been released.
Detective Craig Johnston, of Nelson CIB, said the boy had not been at school since June 24, the Nelson Mail reported.
He refused to explain why.
The homicide investigation was continuing.
The family moved to Stoke, near Nelson, from Auckland six months ago.
The mother has returned to Auckland since her sons's death and the funeral was held there on Wednesday.
The boy's step-father was to reappear in court on July 15.
