An 11-year-old boy is in a serious condition after an accidental hanging in Huntly, where he became tangled in a rope that was tied or tangled in a tree.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 3pm, Waikato Police Senior Sergeant Ray Malcomson said.
"All we know is that we got a call from the emergency services, the ambulance. The boy was playing with some friends and some sort of accident has happened and that was a result of him getting tangled up in the rope," he said.
He said initial investigations showed the incident appeared to be an "accidental hanging" but police were still unsure of exactly how it happened.
Malcomson said it was his understanding the rope had become "either tangled or tied" in a tree.
