A 15-year-old boy has appeared in court after a teenage girl was run over by a car during a fight in Hastings yesterday.
Police were called to the Hastings suburb of Camberley just before 5pm after reports that a 17-year-old was assaulted by three people.
During the fight, the 17-year-old went through a shop plate glass window, Detective Senior Sergeant Dave De Lange said.
His 33-year-old uncle, who came to help, was also attacked. Both were hospitalised but had since been discharged.
Other people became involved, with machetes and golf clubs used as weapons.
The incident escalated when one of the three youths involved in the initial assault allegedly drove a car into the group who were fighting, Mr De Lange said.
As the group went to moved out of the way, a 13-year-old girl standing nearby was hit by the car.
She was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital with serious leg injuries and would remain there for a few days while doctors assessed whether she would require surgery.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with serious assault in relation to the driving incident.
He appeared in Hastings Youth Court today and was remanded on bail to reappear next month.
Mr De Lange sad police were continuing their investigations and further arrests were likely.
