A teenager was hospitalised after an unprovoked attack by four men in Feilding on Saturday night.
The 16-year-old was walking to a friend's house about midnight on West Street, when he was followed by a group of men in a vehicle, Constable Scott Banner of Feilding police said.
All four men got out of the car, knocked the youth to the ground and repeatedly kicked him.
The kicks fractured two of his ribs, Mr Banner said.
The men then got back into the car and left.
They were described as aged in their 20s and Caucasian. They were driving an older model Holden vehicle with black louvres on the rear window.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, Mr Banner said.
