KEY POINTS:
An 11-year-old boy is dead after being flung from a car in a crash in the Dunedin suburb of St Kilda last night.
The boy's friend, around the same age, was seriously injured after also being propelled from the vehicle in Moreau Street around 10.30pm.
Dunedin Police Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken told NZPA today that a Ford Mondeo travelling along Moreau Street was struck by a Subaru at the intersection of Richardson Street.
As a result the two boys were thrown out the vehicle, leaving one of them dead.
"The other one was injured and has been taken to Dunedin Hospital with head injuries and some limb injuries."
One of the vehicles ended up hitting a house resulting in the occupants of the property having to spend the night in a motel.
Mr Aitken said five other people, all young men and women, were taken to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries.
The area had been cordoned off and the police serious crash unit was investigating.
