A boy is in a serious condition after being hit by a car and flung about 12 metres on a notorious stretch of road in Whangarei .
Police are currently speaking to the female driver of a southbound car after the boy, aged about 8 or 9, was struck while he was crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing opposite the Otaika Shopping Centre about 12.30pm today.
Traffic both ways was heavy at the time of the accident and the entire stretch of road opposite the shopping centre has been closed and a diversion put in place through Otaika Rd behind the shops.
Police Serious Crash Unit investigator Senior Constable Warren Bunn is at the scene trying ascertain the circumstances that led to the accident.
Two St John ambulances were also at the scene and the injured boy was transferred to the Whangarei Hospital in a serious condition.
