KEY POINTS:
A 6-year-old boy has died in a house fire in the Manawatu town of Feilding early today.
Fire service spokesman Mike Wanoa told NZPA the boy's mother called the fire service from the house shortly after 4am.
The fire was well underway when firefighters arrived.
Mr Wanoa said as well as fighting the blaze, firefighters in breathing apparatus searched for about 45 minutes until they found the boy, who was already dead.
A fire safety officer and police are investigating the scene.
