A 5-year-old boy has escaped serious injury after falling 40m down a cliff and landing on rocks.
St John ambulance spokesman Gerard Campbell said paramedics were called to the scene at Watson Park Sports Ground in Port Chalmers, Dunedin just before 4pm.
Fire fighters were called in to help about 4.10pm, Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman Jill Higgison said, and they managed to rescue the child from the rocks at the bottom of the cliff.
He was taken to Dunedin Hospital emergency department in a moderate condition.
