A 15-year-old student was found dead by his schoolmates in his boarding house this morning.
The year 11 student, at Selwyn House in King's College, in South Auckland, could not be woken by college staff.
The cause of death is expected to be known when a post-mortem examination is completed.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darrell Harpur said police arrived at the college at 7.20am, followed by emergency medical officers.
"When they arrived they performed further CPR but were unable to resuscitate the young male.
"Police are conducting an investigation on behalf of the Coroner."
There were no suspicious circumstances at this stage, Mr Harpur said.
"This is a tragic sudden death."
A post mortem will take place today to establish the cause of the student's death.
Headmaster Bradley Fenner said the boy's parents were out of town on holiday, but had been told of what happened and would be returning later today.
He said the school had been briefed and students would get support through counselling and chapel services.
The death would have a huge impact on the community, Mr Fenner said.
"Obviously our sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to the family."
The school's flag is flying at half mast and police are on the scene.
