Police will oppose bail for a 14-year-old boy accused of stealing and crashing a car - a day after he allegedly took part in an amateur demolition derby.
Three boys, aged 14 and 15 years old, were arrested yesterday morning after police found two cars stolen from Hamilton and one from Mt Maunganui on O'Regan Rd, on the outskirts of southern Hamilton.
The vehicles were damaged after being driven into each other, with one was found in a ditch, another in a paddock while the third was used as an attempted getaway vehicle but was too damaged to get far.
Sergeant Andrew Connors said one of the 14-year-old boys breached his bail conditions overnight, allegedly stealing a Ford Laser from Hamilton.
"This morning we received a call about 5.30am about a car abandoned on SH31, outside Otorohanga, responding officers encountered three boys being treated by ambulance staff at the intersection of Honikiwi Rd.
"It turns out the 14-year-old driver had crashed the car into a bank and the three occupants abandoned the car, picked up by a Good Samaritan who called an ambulance, they were dropped off at the intersection."
Mr Connors said a 13-year-old travelling as a passenger in the car suffered neck injuries in the crash and was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance.
"Two 14-year-olds are currently being interviewed by Police and the driver is facing a variety of charges from theft of a motor vehicle, breaching bail and driving offences causing injury."
