Police were astonished on Saturday night when they stopped a car in Greymouth to discover the driver was a 13-year-old boy.
After questioning the boy and his three friends, aged 14, 15 and 20, they learned the vehicle had been stolen a short time earlier.
The thief and his friends were taken to the Greymouth Police Station for questioning and the young driver was later released in to the custody of Child Youth and Family. Police are making further inquiries into the involvement the passengers had in the theft of the car.
