A 13-year-old is dead after a crash in the south Auckland suburb of Manurewa this morning from which four people are believed to have fled.
The Subaru station wagon crashed through several fences in Winsford Street and Fairlight Place just after 7am.
Serious crash investigators believe the dead boy was the driver, although have not yet been able to confirm it.
It appeared four other occupants fled from the accident, police said.
Police at the scene said the damage caused when the vehicle left the road covered nearly 100m and that speed was obviously a factor in the crash.
The car destroyed a fence with concrete posts and came to rest against another fence across the road.
Police said they were speaking to a number of people believed to have been in the vehicle when it crashed.
They said they were attempting to contact the registered owner of the vehicle to see if the youths had permission to be driving it.
