The sixth placing achieved by the Wairarapa senior men's bowls team at the octagonal tournament played in Palmerston North over the weekend was not as disappointing as it sounds.
That's the word from selector Dennis Richards, who said that while Wairarapa headed only two of the eight teams on the final points list ,they could have finished much higher but for repeatedly losing out in close finishes.
"I'd hate to think how many games we lost on a tiebreaker, many of them on the very last bowl," Richards said. "You could say the tiebreakers became heartbreakers as far as we were concerned."
Wairarapa also finished sixth in the senior women's event, while in the development squad competitions Wairarapa were sixth amongst the men and seven amongst the women.
Meanwhile, South End Bowling Club teams took first and third places in the annual Peter Gully Memorial tournament held in Marton over the weekend.

Park Bowling Club held their annual major tournament over the weekend with the JP Motors-sponsored event drawing players from the South End, Carterton, Masterton and Lansdowne clubs.
