Singles player Ian Monaghan was in dynamic form for the Wairarapa senior men's outdoor bowls team in their inter-provincial tournament with Wellington, Kapiti and Manawatu in Wellington on Sunday.
Monaghan faced high quality opposition from former national representative Phillip Skoglund jnr (Manawatu), Rob Ashton (Wellington) and David Walker (Kapiti) and came through with flying colours, winning all three of his games.
First up he edged out Ashton 21-19 and then had a battle royal with Walker, who he also beat 21-19. Victory in the encounter with Skoglund was more easily achieved; Monaghan winning that one by a relatively comfortable 21-12.
The only other success for Wairarapa in the A section of the men's competition was secured by the pair of John Claydon and Warren Fisher and they finished with an overall total of 8pts, the same as Manawatu and Kapiti but behind them on points differential. Wellington with 12pts were clearly at the top of the list.
The only win for Wairarapa in the men's B series came from singles player Jamie O'Kane. They tailed the field home with 2pts. Wellington led the way with 16pts, followed by Manawatu 12 and Kapiti 6.
Wellington completed a clean sweep by also winning the A and B sections of the women's competition. The pair of Makaia Campbell and Dorothy Christensen with two wins highlighted the effort of the Wairarapa A team although there was considerable merit too in the effort of Jean Paku to beat the highly-regarded Audrey Stevenson in the singles. Wairarapa A finished with 8pts, behind Wellington 12 and Kapiti 9 and ahead of Manawatu with 7pts.
In the women's B event, Wellington compiled 16pts, Manawatu 8, Kapiti 6 and Wairarapa 6.
