Masterton Park bowler Colin Pugh has provided a classic example of the old adage "always the bridesmaid never the bride."
Pugh has featured in three championship finals at his club this season and finished runner-up on each occasion.
In the men's triples he combined with Jack Williams and Doug McLean to qualify for the final against Laurie Corlett, Jeff Gray and Ron Corbett.
In the 15-end match Pugh looked well placed when leading 13-6 with just three ends to play but Corlett hit back with a four, a two and a one to even things up and force an extra end. There too Pugh's team held the upper hand until Corlett drew to within two inches of the jack with his second bowl , good enough to give his team a 14-13 win.
In the men's fours championship Pugh, Jack Williams, Willis St Clair and Doug McLean squared off against Paddy Paku, Rex Davies, Nelson Tepu and Skip Davies in the decider. With Tepu, in particular, showing consistency on the draw it was Paku's team who emerged comfortable winners 20-11.
The men's singles championship saw Paddy Paku defeat Don Glasgow in one semi-final and Pugh beat Bob Thomas in the other. The final produced a good standard of bowls with Paku's steadiness taking him to a 20-9 win.
