Plans are afoot to boost the interest in women's cricket in Wairarapa
A pre-season gathering of intending players has been arranged for this Saturday at the Masterton Indoor Sports Centre, starting at 10am and continuing through until 11.30am.
Wairarapa women's cricket committee spokeswoman Justine Robertson said the session would be run on a mainly informal basis with the emphasis being on encouraging prospective newcomers to take up the game.
"We'll have a chat, throw a few balls around and have a whack with the bat ? nothing too serious," she said.
Intentions are to start the women's cricket competition about mid-October, with matches being played on Saturday mornings, running from 9am and noon. Six games will be played before Christmas and six in February-Match.
The competition is run on a points system, with a grand final played in March to coincide with the ending of the men's competition.
Robertson said her committee is spreading the message that cricket could be enjoyed by everyone, from the complete novice to the more experienced player. And age is no barrier, with youngsters as young as 12 often performing well on the local scene.
