More than a third of all new BMWs sold in New Zealand last year were diesel-powered, according to BMW Group New Zealand retail sales data.
Last year, diesel engines accounted for 36 per cent of sales, compared to 27 per cent in 2006 and 23 per cent in 2005. The top-selling BMW was the three-litre diesel version of the BMW X5. Diesel engines accounted for more than half of BMW X5 sales for the year.
