More than 250 characters stepped from the printed page at the St Patrick's School Book Character Dress-up Day in Masterton yesterday.
Principal Steve Wheeler, who was dressed as Mr Bump from the Mr Men series of books, said the character dress-up day involved 240 students and most of the teachers and other staff and launched a week of book-related activities at the school.
After a parade of cardboard robots, super heroes and fairytale princesses was completed, he said students were to peruse each class to "spy out" anything defying the ordinary - upside down clocks or out-of-place furniture - to help celebrate Wacky Wednesday.
"It's a good, fun day but a day with a learning edge as well because of the links to the books we're reading."
He said Book Week also tied in with a Reading Together project at the school, where parents came to a class of their own for guidance on reading to their children at home.
