An Antarctic veteran's new book took five years to write - but a lifetime to research.
Oamaru resident David Harrowfield has been visiting and reporting on Antarctica for more than 30 years, and now, after scouring thousands of personal accounts, interviews and records, his research has culminated in the release of a new book - Call of the Ice.
It will be published during the lead-up to the New Zealand Antarctic Festival, which will celebrate the country's 50 years of involvement with the icy continent.
The festival will be held on the weekend of September 28 in Christchurch and Mr Harrowfield is chairman of the organising committee.
He describes his book as an easy read and hopes its pages will open up the frozen continent to the imagination of those who cannot visit
"It's written in what I think is a very nice Kiwi manner - it's very readable," he said. "It's something that I hope people can find interesting without being too bogged down."
He said the book would also make a useful reference guide. "In the back there's a comprehensive index and a bibliography of New Zealand authors and nearly a thousand references.
"There's a list of all the New Zealanders that have been down there."
