A heavy bolt from a crane being carried by a truck on State Highway 1 near Invercargill is believed to have killed a man when it hit his car yesterday.
Police said the 43-year-old driver from Wyndham, about 42km northeast of Dunedin, was killed instantly.
A 13-year-old girl sitting
in the back of the car was also hit by the bolt and suffered serious head injuries. She was taken to Dunedin Hospital.
The two vehicles were passing each other when the accident happened.
Police said the truck driver stopped after the car drove off the road and down a slight bank. They found the heavy bolt in the back of the dead man's car.
Last November, a 32-year-old Pukekohe plasterer, Eddie Tavinor, was decapitated when part of a driveshaft from an oncoming truck flew through his windscreen on Auckland's Southern Motorway.
The part - weighing about 5kg - flicked in the air and smashed through his windscreen.
