A bold showing is expected from the two Wairarapa teams contesting the Southern Districts triangular golf tournament to be played over two rounds of stroke play at Carterton on Saturday and Sunday.
A Wairarapa women's team will be participating for the first time in what was formerly known as the Southern Districts quadrangular and they will be joined by a junior men's combination.
The annual contest has a long history of healthy rivalry between teams from Hawke's Bay, Manawatu-Wanganui, Wellington and Wairarapa but with the absence of Manawatu-Wanganui it has been renamed.
Secretary of Wairarapa golf Colin Hicks welcomed the extra opportunity provided to foster the women's game at representative level and said the hope was it would help encourage more young women to the sport.
The Wairarapa women's team will comprise of Lyn Andrews (Carterton), Anita Karaitiana (Mahunga), Fijian international Sereana Phillipps (Masterton) and Kris Chamblerlain (Masterton), who, incidentally, is the current president of the Wairarapa association.
Colin Hicks also pointed out that the Wairarapa region has produced more talented young male players than most other provinces in New Zealand over the past 20 years and he anticipates the current members of the Wairarapa junior men's team enhancing that reputation.
The four up-and-comers in this weekend's line-up are Troy Shaw (Mahunga), Jason van Zanten (Martinborough), Tony Russo (Featherston) and Braiden Maizey (Carterton). This quartet have been putting in the "hard yards" to hone their skills, and have the advantage of knowing the Carterton course well.
Saturday's play will commence at 1.30pm and Sunday's at 8.15am.
Meanwhile Featherston, Mahunga and Carterton were the winning teams in the first round of matches in the WBS Maquis Shield inter-club competition played at the Carterton course last Sunday. RESULTS:-
