KEY POINTS:
The Earthquake Commission today warned about a suspected thief posing as a loss adjuster in Gisborne to gain access to people's homes.
EQC insurance manager Lance Dixon said the commission heard about the imposter when a woman grew suspicious of his behaviour and rang police who checked his bona fides.
"I think he's probably trying to case properties out," Mr Dixon said.
"I have to say we haven't had this before."
Loss adjusters are a common sight around Gisborne with about 40 stationed in the area after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake on December 20 caused more than $34 million in damages.
Mr Dixon said the genuine article was easily identified by bright yellow vests with "Earthquake Commission" printed on the back.
"All loss adjusters should be able to produce identification. If anyone is in any doubt they should deny the person entry and ring us on 0800 508 765."
