KEY POINTS:
A search team has found the body of a woman swept away by the Karamea River in Kahurangi National Park yesterday.
Annemarie Lee, of Lyttleton in Christchurch, was swimming across the river in Kahurangi National Park, Tasman, with her husband about 2.30pm when the current caught them both.
Rain on Monday had swelled the river, forcing them to camp in a make-shift shelter away from the Karamea Bend Hut as they waited for the current to die down.
Her husband managed to grab a branch and pull himself on to the bank but was unable to find his wife.
The 39-year-old's body was this morning found about 100 metres downstream of her original position.
Police from Motueka have flown in to recover Ms Lee's body and conduct a scene examination.
A man at Karamea Bend Hut had alerted rescue services to the accident yesterday by activating his personal emergency locator beacon, a Rescue Coordination Centre spokesman said.
A helicopter arrived at 7.50pm but was unable to locate Ms Lee.
