Police have still not identified a young man whose body was found on a road in Timaru early today.
St John Ambulance was called at 4am about a person lying on the road.
On arrival they found the man lying in the centre of the road.
He was unresponsive and their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, police said.
The scene was being examined by a forensic pathologist and ESR staff who had travelled to Timaru from Christchurch.
Police hoped an examination of the immediate scene would be completed later today so the man's body could be removed.
It would be taken to Christchurch for a post-mortem examination.
"At this stage the identity of the man cannot be confirmed, although he is believed to be from Timaru and aged in his mid to late 20s," a spokesman said.
"Further information is not available at this time and the next update will be made tomorrow."
Warren Pay, jailed for murder, is now free after being re-sentenced for manslaughter.
