Police today said they were not ruling out suspicious elements surrounding the discovery of a body in the Kope Canal at Whakatane, but they were now confident the body had washed up in the canal system rather than being dumped there.
The police on-site scene investigation was completed yesterday, Bay of Plenty Regional Crime Manager Graham Bell said. The body had not yet been identified.
He would not comment on suggestions that it was that of Patsy Simons, a Whakatane woman who disappeared last Christmas.
Mr Bell said the level of public cooperation in the investigation was heartening. Anyone with further information should contact the Whakatane police, he said.
