KEY POINTS:
Napier police are investigating the death of a man who was discovered by his son lying face-down in a reserve.
The body of 50-year-old Allan Wilkins was found by his youngest son just before 11am yesterday, in Nash St's Greenbelt Reserve in the suburb of Maraenui.
Police say he had suffered a head injury and there are still unanswered questions surrounding his death.
Allan Wilkins' son Steven said the family was waiting for more details from police, but "as far as we know he slipped and has had a tragic accident".
The father of six sons and one daughter had been out to watch a rugby game with friends. "He was too drunk to drive and walked home," Steven Wilkins said.
Inquiry head Detective Senior Sergeant Bill Gregory last night told the Herald on Sunday that Allan Wilkins' youngest son went looking for his father after he failed to return. Investigators were trying to piece together the 50-year-old's movements from 7pm. "Questions remain unanswered. That doesn't mean to say it's a homicide inquiry."
Gregory hoped an autopsy today would provide more information. He asked anyone who may have witnessed any violence or disorder in the area between 9pm and midnight on Friday to contact police.
One woman who lives four houses away from where Allan Wilkins was found said she was shocked to see the body uncovered for most of yesterday. Gregory said it could not be covered because of high winds.
Police removed the body from the reserve just after 5pm yesterday.
