New body-imaging technology may be trialed on travellers at Auckland Airport in an effort to help beat drug smugglers.
The scanners, which would be offered as an alternative to a physical personal search, use passive millimetre-wave technology to detect concealed objects - even when they are hidden beneath clothing.
Customs said passengers who were suspected of concealing objects would be further assessed as per normal procedures.
The trial will assess whether passengers are willing to opt for a scan as opposed to a physical personal search. The scanners are hoped to maintain Customs' effectiveness at detecting items hidden beneath clothing or "body packed" by passengers attempting to bring in drugs, precursor materials and other contraband items into New Zealand.
No decision had been made on whether or not a trial would go ahead, a New Zealand Customs spokeswoman told NZPA.
