Police are trying to identify the body of a man found on a walking track near Tairua in the Coromandel this afternoon.
Sergeant Damien O'Kane of Tairua police said the body, of a man who appeared to be in his mid-30s to mid-40s, was found by walkers on Collins Track in the Puketui Valley about midday.
"The track goes up to a popular lookout and at this time we have had no reports of any missing persons,'' Mr O'Kane said.
Police, ambulance and Search and Rescue personnel met the members of the public who raised the alarm and the man's body was airlifted to Tairua this afternoon.
The man was described as a male Caucasian, wearing a dark blue and grey T-shirt, blue shorts, black boots and a backpack.
