Body found on a Coromandel walking track

Police are trying to identify the body of a man found on a walking track near Tairua in the Coromandel this afternoon.

Sergeant Damien O'Kane of Tairua police said the body, of a man who appeared to be in his mid-30s to mid-40s, was found by walkers on Collins Track in the Puketui Valley about midday.

"The track goes up to a popular lookout and at this time we have had no reports of any missing persons,'' Mr O'Kane said.

Police, ambulance and Search and Rescue personnel met the members of the public who raised the alarm and the man's body was airlifted to Tairua this afternoon.

The man was described as a male Caucasian, wearing a dark blue and grey T-shirt, blue shorts, black boots and a backpack.

Mr O'Kane said initial indications were that the death was not suspicious but that would need to be confirmed by a post-mortem examination.

"At this stage the priority is identifying who the man is and getting in contact with his next of kin. The man did not have any identification on him and we're appealing for anyone who may have a friend or relative unaccounted for to make contact with police,'' he said.

Mr O'Kane said while it was too early to speculate on how the man died, today's discovery highlighted the need for people to let others know when and where they were going into the outdoors and when they were due out.
