Police forensic experts are at the scene where a body was found in a burnt-out car at Maori Bay, Muriwai.
Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said the cause of the fire had not been determined and police were likely to release more information this afternoon.
The fire was "well involved" when firefighters arrived at the West Auckland beach, Fire Service northern communications spokesman Jarron Philips said.
It was brought under control quickly by appliances from Muriwai.
A Fire Service investigator also went to the scene. Police were then called and the area was cordoned off over-night.
Detective Sergeant Stan Brown said it was too early to tell if the incident was suspicious.
Police did not yet know the gender or the age of the deceased.
