A Beach Haven resident said she heard a man screaming for help on the water a couple of nights ago.
”We get a lot of that around here.
“What am I going to do? Jump in the water? I just went to bed,” she said.
The woman said there are at least two people who live on boats in the harbour.
”One older man lives with his dog.”
Her husband said he saw a man in a rowing boat in the water around 2.30pm yesterday when a squall hit.
He said the man was rowing in one direction and heading in another.
”He wouldn’t have ended up on the wharf though. Not with that wind. He would have ended more likely in the creek.”
Another local resident said she heard similar cries for help from a man Sunday a week ago.
”It was a quiet night so I could hear it. When its bad weather, you can’t hear anything,” she said.
She said that rescue happened around 10.30pm with a man plucked from the water by a boat moored in the harbour. The police launch then collected him from the craft.
Auckland Transport (AT) said that the Beach Haven wharf was closed to ferries.
”The Hobsonville Pt ferry is still running to the city, it’s just not stopping at Beach Haven.
“We would advise people to check the AT app for more updates.”
