A body was found in the ruins of a house fire in Mokai, near Taupo, yesterday.
Police have yet to formally identify the body.
Firefighters discovered the body after being called to the house, which was burned to the ground, in Paerata Rd about 4.15am.
A scene examination would continue today as police tried to determine how the fire was started.
Police are interested in locating a vehicle, a 1993 Nissan Primera saloon coloured grey, which was usually associated with the address.
