BMW bills its 5 Series GT as "defining a brand new segment", which will come as news to Skoda, which already sells a large sedan with an innovative two-stage tailgate.
But the Skoda delivers solidly respectable lines, while the 5 Series GT features a coupe-like silhouette, and a designer cabin with elevated seating beneath a glass roof.
BMW NZ will not yet confirm local specifications, but we're likely to see a choice of three engines, including a 3-litre straight six, a 3.0-litre common rail, direct injection diesel and a 4.4-litre V8. Power is sent to the rear wheels via the eight-speed auto currently fitted to the 12-cylinder 7 Series.
The 5 Series GT launches internationally later this year, and will come to New Zealand in early 2010 albeit without the ConnectedDrive pack.
As well as lane-change warning and night vision, ConnectedDrive delivers BMW online, teleservices and an emergency call function that automatically reports your car's location.
